It's so odd to teach a class on the Psychology of Sexual Behavior to college students. On the one hand, they know so much, but on the other hand, they know so little. What they know are the mechanics of sex. What they don't know are the subtleties of sex. They define sex as intercourse; any other act of intimacy is not sex. When I describe toe-curling orgasm or orgasm as dissolution of the ego self and the awakening of the soul, I get blank stares. Sex as a path to illumination and higher states of spiritual awareness is antithetical to their experience. Yet poets and mystics write odes to the ecstatic bliss of souls in sexual union.
At the end of my previous essay,
"Soul-freeing sex," I wrote that I'd be describing energy techniques to sensitize you to your body. The following is a guided imagery that will help you clear stagnant energy and invigorate your life force.
Find a quiet room in your home. Close the door, turn off the phone and turn down the lights. Make sure the room has a bed or sofa where you can lie down comfortably. Have on hand anything you like to enhance the sensory experience. Candle light, rhythmic music, incense all serve to stimulate the senses, but this is your time, so choose what you want. The atmosphere needs to be relaxing. Relaxation is really the key to reaching your soul.
After you've prepared the room to your liking, lie down, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Draw your attention to your belly. Become aware of your belly's rise and fall. Pay attention to the rhythm of your breathing and how it changes as you focus on it.
Draw your awareness to the top of your head. As you breathe, imagine that you're breathing in a beam of white light through the top of your head. Imagine that the light is filling the inside of your head, spinning like a lighthouse light with the spin focused on the area right behind your eyes. Imagine that the spinning is getting faster and faster, clearing out any tension. Let the light slow, and then imagine that it continues down your body, stopping at your throat. Again, see the light start to spin faster and faster and faster. Think about something you'd like to say to your beloved that you haven't as yet said. Let the light slow and continue down through your body, stopping at your heart. Again, let the light speed up faster and faster and faster. As you think of your beloved, allow whatever emotions you're feeling to surface. Breathe into your heart. With every inhale, feel the light filling you more. Let any emotion that's surfacing ride the wave of your exhale. Breathe in, fill up, breathe out, let go. Do it again: breathe in, fill up, breathe out, let go. Allow the light to slow and continue its descent to your belly. Breathe, imagine the light is speeding up again and spinning faster and faster inside your belly. As it does this, let your belly soften, releasing any armoring you've built up. Breathe; watch the light spin faster and faster, melting away defensiveness and allowing even more softening. Allow the light to slow again and continue down to your pubic bone. Watch the light as it speeds up and begins to spin faster and faster and faster, spinning away wounds, disappointments and disillusions left over from past relationships. Imagine the light is breaking up crystallized fragments of anger or hurt. Take another deep breath and, as you exhale, watch the light slow and continue down to the tip of your tailbone at the base of your spine. Inhale again, and watch the light start spinning faster and faster, bringing light to the deepest recesses of your being. As the light spins, watch it stir up any hidden worry or fear and use your exhale to breathe it out through the space between your legs. Keep the spinning going faster and faster, exhaling out worry and fear. Breathe and let the light slow.
Imagine the entire center of your body illuminated by brilliant white light. Watch as the light expands out from the center, radiating to each and every part of your body and beyond. Place your hands on your belly. Breathe. See the expanded light now fold into itself in the center of your body. Use your hands to direct the light up and down your spine. Place both hands on your heart and repeat the following:
My body is the temple of my soul.
My body is the dwelling place of the living God.
My body is beautiful.
My body is vital.
My body is alive.
My body is free.
Bring your arms up over your head and stretch your arms and legs in opposite directions. Wiggle your fingers and toes, rotate your wrists and ankles, bend your knees and rotate them from side to side. Sit up slowly. Rotate your head, first to the right, then to the left. Breathe again and sit for a few moments before resuming any activity.
Think about all the things in your life for which you're grateful. Feel how good it is to be alive.
Next week I will guide you through another energy exercise that will deepen the union of your body and soul.
