Column: Writing Down Your Soul
In the course of doing research for my book, "Writing Down the Soul," I stumbled upon a convergence between science and spirituality. Physics has identified the zero-point field, a level of energy that simply cannot be removed. All things, it turns out, are energy, and all energy is connected. In other words, the spiritual belief that we are all one is scientifically correct.
This research led me eventually to Lauralyn Bunn, an Akashic Record reader. The Akashic Record is a term for the universal filing system that contains every thought, word, deed, feeling and action of every soul that ever lived. The records are described as being imprinted on a subtle substance called akasha, a Sanskrit word that means primordial ether or cosmic substance. In the Hebrew tradition, it's called the Book of Life.
Last Wednesday I had an Akashic Record reading. Lauralyn explained the process: I ask a question. She reformats it, if necessary. She poses the question to the Masters and Teachers who have access to my soul's experiences in the Record. The Masters and Teachers retrieve the information and convey it back to her symbolically. Lauralyn then translates the meaning of those symbols as closely as she can into English.
Lauralyn began by saying a prayer. The Sacred Prayer attuned her to my life energy and invoked a shield of God's love and protection. I could hear part of the prayer out loud; the rest she said silently. When the Masters and Teachers said, "We are here." Lauralyn invited me to ask my first question. I had my questions written in advance. I read:
"I see now that my ex-husband's behavior forced me to turn to God for help, start writing every day, and led to my path as a spiritual writer and teacher. So I now view him as my soul's mate. Did we come in with a sacred contract to accomplish this, to move my soul forward in this way?"
Their response was swift and emphatic:
"Nothing was forced. This was very much a free-will choice. Others in the same position have chosen differently. This was chosen inside of you."
I was taken aback by the vehemence of their response. Lauralyn could sense my surprise, and she explained that the Masters and Teachers are responsive to the living energy of words. I used the word "force," which holds a powerful and, in the way I used it, negative energy. They responded to the energetic impact of my word. She also reiterated that the Record holds my soul's information but nothing is preordained or predetermined. The Masters and Teachers always emphasize the presence of free-will choice.
Lauralyn began to reframe my question, but before she could finish, she said, "His energy is moving forth" and suddenly my ex-husband was speaking directly to me! Even Lauralyn seemed taken aback. She said, "Whoa! Did he have a strong personality?" (Oh, yeah.) My ex-husband spoke, and because my pen was in motion, I captured every word. He said:
"I always knew that you were right. I was a stubborn soul, wasn't I? Just know that inside my meanness, I always knew that you were right. It wasn't easy, the path I chose, and many, many times I held inside my mouth and tongue the words I knew in my mind. My personality wanted to hurt you. I could not integrate what you shared with me, yet I want you to know that the speed of my soul's journey since leaving has been deeply impressed by your goodness. All good things are coming forth. Hold this in your heart and know the love I have for you."
Sensing he was finished, I whispered, "Please watch over our son." Lauralyn said that he had already dissolved back into the light but the light twinkled when I said our son's name. I took that as a yes.
When I could speak again, I asked the Masters and Teachers, "When you write, where are you? Are you in the Records?" They said that you are not in one place; you can be in many different places. You are not always in the Record, but you can be in the Record. To help me understand, they gave this analogy:
"When you are standing in a meadow of wildflowers in the Alps or standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon, you feel deeply connected. Are you at that moment only in the Alps or only in the Grand Canyon? In the same way with writing, in a moment of deep connection there is a sense of awe. There is no question that you are connected. If someone said, 'Prove to me that you are connected with something,' you'd say, 'I don't have to. I know.' It is only the human mind that prevents the deep connection all the time. The potential to be connected is always there."
This analogy was so beautiful and so perfect that I asked if I could use it in the book. They said they'd be honored! Use it, they said, because it's important to demystify the mystical experience of writing. "Make it like brushing your teeth," they said. Don't you love that image? Yes, you can go deep when you write. But in the end, it's a daily practice that keeps you spiritually healthy — like brushing your spiritual teeth!
I asked several other questions about my son, my career and my book. I received answers that made it crystal-clear to me that they were reading my soul's records.
My last question was about my mother, Laurene, who passed three months ago. I asked if I had uncovered all the gifts she had for me. There was a long pause and finally a soft "You already know them." The difference between their response to my first and last question was dramatic. The difference, Lauralyn explained, came from me, my energy, my need to know. The Masters and Teachers were right. I did know the answer. I had spent six months exploring the gifts my mother revealed in her unusual dance with death in my www.religionandspirituality.com columns. And because I already knew, there was no energy behind my question and consequently a matching lack of energy in their response.
From my Akashic Record reading, I learned that there is a Book of Life. It is real and it is accessible. I learned that the universe responds in equal measure to your desire, your need to know. I learned that words carry distinct energetic vibrations. I learned that my ex and I were soul mates for one another. And I learned that I am loved and protected and guided — and so are you.
