No Air? Does Jordin Sparks Know My Husband?
Column: God In Real Time
I was driving with my daughter in the car when Jordan Sparks and Chris Browns song No Air came on the radio. It was such a beautiful day that I rolled the windows down, cranked up the sound as loud as I could take it, kicked up the bass and looked my daughter and said, "That's me and your dad." She just slid down in her seat, embarrassed "Mom that's just way to much information." I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to know what inspired that song, but I could have written it. You don't come up with a song like that without feeling it. That song is now my marriage anthem.
As I thought about the words to the song I said to myself this stuff has been going on a long time. Writers and singers are always producing songs with a message. Maybe instead of listening to them for music value we need to create some anthems in our lives to jump start relationships. Some people are so far away from No Air in their relationships that they can't even understand the song. They might need to pull out some 60's music like Stop In The Name of Love (before you break my heart) and kick start their relationship. Maybe their anthem needs to be just exposing their feelings on really wanting to have a better relationship but need their spouses help. Other's might need to stop off in the 70's pull out some Gino Vanelli and remind their spouse how good they are to them - I Just Wanna Stop (and tell you how I feel about you baby) or sing Never Can Say Good Bye before walking out on a relationship. A few people might need to stop off in the 80's with the Dooby Brother's, Minute by Minute. I don't know what happened in the 90's with the proliferation of what I considered disgusting rap, I blanked out a decade. Wait a minute there were a few like Remember the Time, Saved The Best for Last and then the whole Luther era. So I did not miss everything. Those songs can heal a marriage. Songs have a way of stirring memories and healing emotions. Everybody that has ever been in love has a song. Just live it.
