Learning About God From My Dog

Column: God In Real Time
You ever wonder why dog is God spelled backwards? Now before someone has a holy ghost fit about the comparison consider this - haven't we always said that a dog is a man's best friend? Well doesn't God claim the same. What happens when we get lost, like in an avalanche who do they send to find us - a cat? No they send a dog. When we get lost, especially spiritually who comes to find us God. So we might just have something here.

Let me explain how I got on this course of thinking. It all started when I went to walk my dog and talk to God. Sometimes when I take my dog for a walk I put her on a leash, but sometimes I don't. Yesterday was a non leash day. As we started walking God impressed in my spirit to start watching the dog. I didn't know what I would be looking at, but I just started watching the dog.

First she was walking behind me. That was good. The she started walking in front of me. That was okay because I knew that she knew the path and as long as she would stop if I called her she would be safe. Then something caught her attention and she started straying to the other side of the street. That was not good because she had placed herself in harms way. She could easily be hit by a car and I would have no way to get to her quick enough. So I had to constantly keep calling her back. Sometimes she would listen other times she would not. When she did not I would have to go, pick her up, tell her what she did wrong and correct her. After she got corrected she would start walking behind me again, to which I would say, good girl. This went on the entire time we were on the walk. Then God said to me, doesn't that remind you of me and you?

I stopped walking and just let those words settle in. It was an amazing thought. Then I smiled and said, God you are so right. We often start out walking with God just the way he wants it. We follow him. Then there are times when we get ahead of him and he says that's okay because at least they are on the right path and are not in danger. But then there are times when we start straying to the other side. God doesn't get angry or frustrated with us, he just keeps calling us back. Sometimes we listen and sometimes we don't. When we don't he doesn't say well just stay out there and if you get hurt that's your fault for being hard headed. He doesn't punish us. He just goes over to where we are, picks us up, tells us what we did wrong and corrects us. Then as we begin to follow him again he says, good job.

So perhaps if you want to learn more about God, get a dog. They can teach you some amazing spiritual things.
